Hermes Abrasives announces the addition of new Full Width Material Scanner equipment to its Virginia manufacturing facility.

In the multi-step process of making coated abrasives, it is important to obtain consistent and measurable data at each stage so that total product characteristics are cloned from batch to batch. The Full Width Scanner measures the thickness of the material across the entire face as it passes several points in the manufacturing process.

Precise sensor positioning allows the scanner to provide continuous data for comparison to strict tolerances. Potential problems are discovered earlier in the manufacturing process, reducing waste and downtime.

The previous system, used until January 2003, was originally installed in 1990 and was state-of-the-art technology.

The use of the new Full Width Scanner provides a more consistent, higher quality product within stricter guidelines than previously possible. The significant capital investment in new Maker related technology is proof of Hermes commitment to continuous improvement.
